Iowa tornado: Gov. Reynolds tours damaged farm in Harlan
HARLAN, Iowa (WOWT) - Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds paid a visit to the Shelby County town of Harlan Monday to tour damage left behind by the April 26 tornadoes.
Reynolds toured the farm of former Iowa State Senator Nancy Boettger. Boettger’s property suffered extensive damage, and two horses on the property were lost.
Reynolds signed a disaster proclamation the day of the outbreak, allowing state resources to be allocated for individual assistance.
“We are in the midst of applying, we’ve sent an application in for a presidential (disaster) declaration,” Reynolds said. “We’ll have FEMA, we believe, on site tomorrow to verify some of the numbers that we have. We think we’re really close to being accepted or to actually get the presidential declaration. We should know by the end of the week, I would think.”
The presidential disaster declaration would serve as another source of funding for individual assistance on the federal level.
Several volunteer high school students were on site as well, working to clean up debris.
“We’re on site, we’re working. We’ve got state agencies that have shown up on site to really make it easier for them to get the resources that they need, making sure they know what resources are available. But I think most importantly, they’re the ones who are inspiring us.”
