Election 2024: Nebraska Democrats, Republicans organize ahead of election day
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - With just 16 days left, the race to Election Day is heating up.
Local, state and national organizers are working around the clock ahead of November 5.
On Sunday, the Douglas County Democratic Party organized an event at Memorial Park.
Vice Chair Karin Waggoner said over 2,000 people gathered to create a 3-D version of something that’s been popping up on signs and shirts all over the Metro.
“We made a human blue dot,” Waggoner said.
Nebraska‘s electoral college votes are broken up, it’s not a “winner-takes-all” state. Two votes are state wide, while the remaining three represent each of the state’s congressional districts.
CD-2 is known as the blue dot in a sea of red.
“We take ownership over the blue dot,” Waggoner said. “We take it very seriously.”
The rally at Memorial Park was held on Kamala Harris' birthday.
“We can take these 1,500 people who participated today and we can harness that power,” Waggoner said. “We can use it for local down-ballot candidates to get awareness.”
The event came after a Saturday visit by Vice Presidential candidate and Nebraska native, Tim Walz.
Former independent candidate for president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also visited Omaha over the weekend. He stumped in support of Donald Trump alongside former Democratic Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
“Just hearing the message and what the Trump team has for our future,” said Omaha native Kelly Simms who attended the rally. “What their policies are going to be.”
Many others who joined Simms at RFK Jr.‘s event said they were working to turn the blue dot back to red. CD-2 went to Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020.
“Whatever small part Omaha and the broader Metro can do with NE-02 to help save our country, I’m all about it,” said Stephen Bader.
