OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - 6 News Daybreak has the headlines you need to know to get your Friday started.

Hearing held Friday on alleged widespread medical marijuana petition fraud

The Nebraska Attorney General said Monday that he believes that widespread fraud has occurred on petitions that put medical marijuana on the Nov. ballot.

A hearing will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. in response to the alleged fraud.

Defendants of the case are asking for the Secretary of State, Bob Evnen, to dismiss more information about the ballots. They are concerned with the validity of thousands of signatures.

They also claim that some signature collectors, and others who signed off on the petitions, broke the law.

But, Nebraskans are already voting on the medical marijuana issue, as in-person voting started Monday.

Officials announce details of Harney Streetscape Project

Mayor Jean Stothert, Rep. Don Bacon, and representatives of the Blackstone Business Improvement District (BID) are announcing the details of a new project on Friday.

According to a release, the Harney Streetscape Project will focus on reducing traffic speeds and adding wider sidewalks. Overall, they say it is meant to prioritize pedestrian safety in the Blackstone District.

The City of Omaha Public Works will oversee design and construction, a release states.

The project has received a $2 million grant, with a $500,000 local match from the BID.

Update on case of Omaha 13-year-old charged with murder

A juvenile detention review hearing is being held Friday for a 13-year-old charged with the murder of an Omaha man.

The boy one of six young people accused of killing Uber driver Mursal Jama in Aug.

He is currently in Douglas County Youth Center. Nebraska law will not allow him to be tried as an adult, as the cutoff is 14 years old.

The alleged involvement of the youths in Jama’s murder has sparked debate over how the Omaha-metro handles juvenile justice.

His detention review is at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Peaceful protest held Friday over officer-involved shootings

A peaceful protest is being held Friday in response to two recent officer-involved shootings in the metro.

Cameron Ford, 37, was shot and killed in Aug. as police were serving a “no knock” warrant. Steven Phipps, 22, died after he was shot in Sept. while fleeing from officers during a traffic stop.

The protest is from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Omaha Police Department’s headquarters.

The organizer tells 6 News that OPD and the City of Omaha are aware of the event.

Family of homicide victim to release balloons Friday

The family of homicide victim Alexander Whitcomb, 37, will release balloons on Friday.

Police are still investigating the homicide of Whitcomb last Sunday outside of Los-Diablos Motorcycle Club.

The gathering will start at 6 p.m. outside of the bar where Whitcomb was killed.

The motorcycle club has faced police criticism and calls to shut down the bar. A spokesperson said that the club is in “...full cooperation with law enforcement to resolve this issue.”
