OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Omaha Police Chief is recommending that the officer who shot and killed a man during a no-knock warrant last month be fired from his position.

OPD Chief Todd Schmaderer on Wednesday released a statement saying Officer Adam Vail was in violation of the department’s protocol when issuing a warrant to 37-year-old Cameron Ford, who Vail shot dead inside an Omaha house in the early morning hours of Aug. 28.

The Omaha Police Officers Association released a statement late Wednesday night in support of Vail, claiming the circumstances and nature of the warrant authorities were serving Ford justified his actions.

“Officer Vail made a split-second decision in an extremely dangerous situation, and we believe he deserves the same fair treatment that every citizen is entitled to,” said Patrick Dempsey, President of the OPOA.

Ford’s family publicly called for Vail’s dismissal earlier this month, but while he could be terminated, Vail won’t face any criminal charges, as Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine determined that he acted within the law and used legal force when he killed Ford.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert weighed in on the chief’s statement Wednesday and said she has full confidence in the process in which Schamderer came to this decision.
