U.S. sees highest number of tornado reports in over 10 years

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - So far in 2024, there have been over 1,000 tornado reports in the United States and over 60 so far in the state of Nebraska, according to the National Weather Service.

The national tornado report count is considered high for this point in the year, nearly 300 above average! The last time we had this many tornado reports was 2011, a year that produced 2,240 tornado reports overall.

All of the current data for 2024 is preliminary sightings and events from the National Weather Service Local Storm Reports. The official numbers for the year have not been officially verified yet.

Compared to annual trends from 2005 through 2015, the average number of national tornado reports for this point in the year is 749, compared to the current 2024 number of 1,008.

The state of Nebraska sees an average of 48 tornadoes per year. With over 60 tornado reports so far in 2024 for Nebraska, we have already surpassed that! Iowa averages 52 tornadoes per year, with an annual average of 1,225 tornadoes for the country, based on data from 1999 through 2022.
