Highest number of severe weather warnings in years for Omaha area

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - If you’ve felt like there’s been more severe weather than normal in Omaha this year, you would be correct! In Douglas, Pottawattamie, and Sarpy County there has been an exceptionally high amount of Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings issued so far in 2024.

In Douglas County, there have been 31 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 9 Tornado warnings issued so far in 2024, adding to a total of 40 warnings combined. According to archives, this ranks as number one highest since data collection started in 1986. It’s important to note that warnings have changed over the years.

In Pottawattamie County, there have been 62 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 19 Tornado warnings issued, totaling 81 warnings so far for 2024. This ranks as number one highest since since data collection started in 1986, with the second highest coming in at 56 total warnings in 2008.
