OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A hit-and-run crash disabled his car, and four months later, U.S. military veteran Cory Petersen is grateful that DoorDash changed direction and its insurance delivered a check to cover repairs.

“I was shocked,” Cory said. “I couldn’t believe it, especially since I was trying for several months and I wasn’t getting anywhere.”

On May 17, Cory was delivering a DoorDash order when a car smashed into his vehicle near 60th and L Street in Omaha. Mike Koley was an eyewitness.

“The driver kind of looked around, looked left and right, and jumped in his car to see if it will run, puts it in drive and takes off,” Koley said.

Even though Cory has insurance, his claim was denied because the policy lacked rideshare coverage, which includes delivery. Meanwhile, DoorDash said it’s the driver’s responsibility.

6 News’ initial report in June led Cory to retain a lawyer, who stepped in and fixed the issue.

The attorney can’t reveal how, but he confirmed to 6 News that he convinced DoorDash insurance to send Cory a check for more than $17,000, which covered repairs to the severely damaged front end of his 2018 Honda Accord. And even more importantly, repairs to the airbags, so Cory can get back to work.

Mike Koley was happy to hear that Cory got the money after witnessing the injustice that he experienced.

“I just wish there was a way to find the individual who caused all this, because ultimately, he’s the one that should be paying for it,” Koley said. “But I’m so glad it worked out for [Cory].”

Working for DoorDash on the side earned Cory extra money so he could buy the car. Now, it’s fully repaired and he no longer has to rely on others for transportation to a fulltime job that puts bread on the table.

Both Cory and the attorney who helped him urge anyone who uses their own car to transport food or people for a company should check their auto insurance policy. It needs a rideshare endorsement to ensure coverage in a crash and also adds protection if the delivery driver isn’t at fault.
