Crash in Elkhorn leaves one dead and one in hospital
One person is dead and another is in the hospital after an accident Wednesday night in Elkhorn.
The crash happened at 189th St. and West Maple Road shortly after 10 p.m.
Omaha Police say that a Jeep SUV “failed to yield the right-of-way” to an SUV, causing the collision at the intersection.
The driver of the Jeep was declared dead on the scene, according to police. The passenger of the Jeep, a middle-aged woman, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
OPD says the driver of the SUV is not injured.
Hurricane Milton makes landfall on Florida’s coastline
More than three million homes and businesses are currently without power as Hurricane Milton slams Florida.
AP reports that Milton is hitting cities with winds of over 100 mph and heavy rains after making landfall Wednesday night.
Early Thursday, Milton weakened to a Category 1 storm. Forecasters say that danger still remains in Florida.
Officials issued dire warnings to flee or face grim odds of survival, AP says. Some that evacuated are staying at a RV Park in Gretna.
Additional NE-TF1 members responding to Milton
A crew of 29 Nebraska Task Force 1 workers are being deployed to help with hurricane response.
The group has been reassigned to Milton. Nebraska crews have been in the area since Sept. 25 in response to Hurricane Helene.
They are waiting on orders for the best way they can support the response efforts, officials say.
“Thank you to our families and crews at home for supporting NE-TF1 in their efforts. Keeping all those affected in our thoughts,” Lincoln Fire & Rescue said in a Facebook post.
UNMC to unveil name of new Saddle Creek expansion
The University of Nebraska Medical Center is announcing the name of their new Saddle Creek development on Thursday.
The 30-acre district will house UNMC’s “Innovation Hub,” with plans to expand into more.
The event is at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The plan includes extending 46th Street south through the middle of the new campus, as well as adding bike trails that connect with the already existing trail system.
Owners and employees of some businesses near UNMC told 6 News they are concerned with how the school’s campus expansion will impact their storefronts.
UNMC said they expect construction to be done by Dec. 2024.
Groundbreaking of new La Vista project for veterans
A groundbreaking ceremony is being held Thursday in La Vista for a new space at Central Park East.
The project, called Reflections Plaza, is a new space to honor veterans who have passed away.
Along with remembering those who served, the project also commemorates first responders and the citizens of La Vista.
The ceremony will be held at 4 p.m.
Bellevue Public Schools to open career center
On Thursday, the Frank Kumor Career Center is officially opening in Bellevue.
Programs will be offered at the center that help with high school students' education, bringing them real-life learning experiences with local businesses, non-profits, and industry professionals.
Automotive maintenance, aviation, nursing assistance, and education programs will be offered, according to their website.
The center is named after a long-time board member at Bellevue Public Schools.
