2 workers die in 80-foot silo after likely being overtaken by toxic gas, authorities say

BROOKINGS COUNTY, S.D. (Dakota News Now/Gray News) - Two workers were killed Saturday after they became trapped in a silo near Volga, South Dakota.

According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the call after it came in at around 11:25 a.m. on September 7.

Investigators learned the two workers were repairing a damaged roof on top of an 80-foot silage silo when they became trapped inside for unknown reasons.

The two workers are then believed to have been overtaken by toxic gas.

They were both extricated and seen by medical personnel, who determined both workers were deceased.

The individuals were identified as 51-year-old Larry Dalzell, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and 41-year-old Randi Vandekieft, of Warner Robins, Georgia.

Both were working for the company Heartland Tank, Inc.

Other responding agencies included the Volga Fire Department, Brookings Fire Department, Brookings County Emergency Management, Arlington Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance and Sanford Air Med.
