AURORA, Neb. (KSNB) - The Aurora Police Department is investigating a crash involving a semi Monday morning.

It happened just before 7 a.m. just west of the intersection of Highway 34 and First Street in front of Schneider’s Hardware.

Police Chief Paul Graham said a car heading eastbound on Hwy 34 crossed over the center line and hit the westbound semi.

Minutes earlier, dispatch received a report of that same vehicle swerving all over the road just west of town.

Chief Graham said the vehicle didn’t hit the semi head on but closer to the fuel tank, taking out the truck’s back tires.

He said the collision then caused the semi to jackknife in the intersection.

The fuel tank was punctured leading to it draining onto the road. Our reporter on scene could see crews putting an absorbent material on the fuel to help clean it up.

The chief said the driver of the SUV had to be removed with the jaws of life. She was conscious and alert when she was taken by ambulance to a Grand Island hospital.

Her vehicle sustained heavy front end damage.

Chief Graham said they don’t suspect at this time that alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Police are still investigating but believe she may have been tired as she was heading back to Omaha leading to the crash.

The semi driver was not injured. Seat belts were in use.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
