After winning the World Series in 2015 and playing in two straight fall classics, Kansas City finished shy of the postseason, punctuated by a 3-2 loss Sunday.
The Indians handed the Royals the defeat, several days after the club was mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The setback sealed Kansas City's final record this year at 81-81.
Francisco Lindor's sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth provided the winning run. Yan Gomes smacked a two-run homer on the first pitch he had seen since July 17, helping the Indians nail down home-field advantage in the division series.
