OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Those who suffered damage to their homes during the April 26 tornado outbreak are eligible for assistance from a local nonprofit organization.

United Way of the Midlands announced this week that $1,000 per household in emergency assistance is available to address the losses caused by the tornadoes.

Officials with United Way said priority will be given to those who experienced serious damage or complete loss of property if their residence is in one of the following counties: Douglas (NE), Lancaster (NE), Washington (NE), Crawford (IA), Harrison (IA), Mills (IA), Pottawattamie (IA) and Shelby (IA).

To apply for assistance via United Way, click here or call 211.

Applicants must provide their intended use for the funds and to upload materials such as proof of insurance policies, FEMA application ID, or a disaster report.

The money for the emergency assistance comes out of a $1.1 million relief fund raised by United Way — $300,000 of which was awarded to various organizations and cities in need of money for disaster relief efforts.
