LA VISTA, Neb. (WOWT) - Some La Vista residents say they enjoy the walkways and trails around town.

“This is fine for us now,” Kathy Kopocis said. “But I know the plaza’s going to go across 84th, so we’re looking forward to that. That’ll be another trail.”

The city is coming up with a blueprint for how to expand that system with the Active Mobility Plan.

“Our Active Mobility Plan was looking to find opportunities for improvement to our sidewalk connections, to our pedestrian crossings throughout the city, as well as trail connections to other area trails,” said city spokesman Mitch Beaumont.

According to feedback on surveys earlier this year, the top three things residents talked about are improved crossings, repairing or creating new sidewalks, and increasing connections.

“People want to use our trails to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” Beaumont said. “And so that involves a variety of forms of recreation—running, biking walking—as well as getting from somebody’s house to a place where they can do things.”

It’s about safety, too.

“As development projects occur in our city, we want to make sure that we know the needs for walkers and bikers and runners so that they can safely use our trails,” Beaumont said.

From the survey feedback, he said the city has created a list of projects, and it’s looking for opinions from residents on those at the Let’s Talk event it’s hosting Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the La Vista Community Center.

Public works will also have information on some street improvement projects too.

They promise free pancakes for those who attend.
