LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Gov. Jim Pillen has appointed an ousted school board member to the Nebraska Library Commission.

Terri Cunningham-Swanson and Alan Wang are the latest members of the commission, with terms through June 2027.

The governor’s website had four seats posted for the position in June: a Southeast district member plus one at-large position for each of three other districts — Three Rivers, Central Plains, and Southeast.

Cunningham-Swanson made headlines early this year after the Plattsmouth School Board voted last year to hold a recall election to oust her from the board. Leading up to the vote, four of the nine board members provided statements to a website promoting the recall.

Proponents said she cost taxpayers thousands of dollars in legal fees and increased teacher and administration workload. They claimed that despite a 1.26% increase in taxes in the Plattsmouth Community School District since she took office, she has made late payments on property taxes — or left them completely unpaid.

“My goal has always been to do right by our students, our district and our community,” she said in a statement after the election. “I can step away knowing that I have honored my commitment and honored God while doing so.”

Among other duties, the Nebraska Library Commission appoints the State Advisory Council on Libraries, which meets twice and year and advises on library development across the state and evaluates library services and programs as well as technology and sharing plans.
