OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Dylan Van Dyke hasn’t skipped a beat in his first full season as the Skyhawks starting quarterback.

“He’s just a natural leader, so the kids just rally around him,” head coach Matt Turman said. “He’s one of those kids that the better he plays, the better the rest of the team plays. They kind of rise to his level. So he’s that type of kid that has really sparked this offense.”

That was certainly the case last Friday at Lincoln Pius X. Van Dyke threw for three touchdowns and ran in another four in Skutt Catholic’s 55-14 win over the Thunderbolts.

“Our play calling was really well and our linemen are really great,” Van Dyke said. “I’m not making any of those plays without our receivers or linemen. So having those guys help me has been great.”

“He’s had a pretty remarkable season so far,” Turman added. “I think he’s thrown for over 20 touchdowns with one interception. He’s closing in on a bunch of school records on the passing side of things. We hope it continues for the rest of the season and into the postseason.”

As they enter the toughest part of their schedule, the undefeated Skyhawks are determined to make it back to Lincoln and the Class B State Championship Game.

“We’ve played some great teams but these next few coming up are really going to tell how we are as a team,” Van Dyke said.

“It’s always in the back of your mind, ‘Let’s go out there and finish the job,’” Turman admitted. “I think we have some of the kids that have that hunger and that competitiveness and that drive to make it happen.”
