Early Christmas: Mulhall’s already kicking off the holidays in Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The choir sounds an awful lot like Bing Crosby... Ralphie’s dad won a major award that’s fragile... and Flick is going to put his tongue on that flagpole again.
Yes, that is Christmas.
But it’s the end of the summertime when the team at Mulhall’s Garden Center in Omaha begins putting all of it together.
“Our team comes in and we start to set up right at Labor Day or right thereafter, so it’s been a long haul,” said Molly Pool.
Molly is the queen of Christmas at Mulhall’s. She went all the way to Germany to bring back Christmas pyramids and German smokers.
“In Germany, they use incense for the celebration of the 12th night,” Molly said. “You get the incense going and then the smoke comes through and he sends a little msoke up there.”
Molly says sharing other Christmas traditions can be found here, and the German toys and decorations go back several hundred years.
“There’s just a history of toymaking and symbolism with the celebration that goes on for several days,” she said. “The nutcrackers have their own symbolism. They are protectors. It’s a deeply-rooted tradition and we also have other countries that we represent here as well, with other celebrations that go on.”
There is so much to see and learn during Christmas at Mulhall’s, and of course, plenty of Christmas trees.
But is all of this too early?
“I don’t think it’s too early to start thinking about celebration and the time we get together as a community, so I’m going to have to say no,” Molly said with a laugh.
Mulhall’s opens it’s Christmas celebration Thursday at 5 p.m.
